My choice of music genre

I have chosen the pop genre because according to www.musicweek.com, pop music took a 38.5 % share of singles market in 2012 and is the highest percentage ever recorded for a decade. also the dominance of pop was even stronger in the singles market, where its share rose to the highest level since 2002. i also think this was suited to the audience of today because most people who buy these singles are teenagers or children. Likewise I chose this because there are many male and female pop artists to choose from. From my opinion, i think that pop magazines look more fun and are more colorful so I think it would be easier to work with these key elements for the audience to notice the magazine and possibly buy it.

Bauer Media Group
This is a large german publishing company based in hamburg, which operates in 15 countries worldwide. since the company was founded in 1875, it has been privately owned and under management by the bauer family. it was formally called Heinrich Bauer Verlag KG, later abbreviated to HBV and eventually shortened to H.Bauer. The Music Magazines this publisher provides are: Q, MOJO and Kerrang.



Emap
Emap was the second largest magazine publisher in the UK with about 18 % of the newsstand market by revenue. However , in july 2007, the company announced a strategic review. This lead the company to split up and was later sold off in december. The business-to-business magazines were sold to the Guardian Media Group and a private equity firm Apax. The new company is to be called Incisive-Emap. Its consumer magazines and radio arm, including Kiss and Magic, went to Bauer for £1.14 billion, later making the german magazine Publisher the largest in britain.

IPC Media is one of the united kingdoms leading consumer magazine and digital publishers, with a large a portfolio selling over 350 million copies each year. IPC Media groups title under five magazine divisions: Connect, Inspire, Ignite!, SouthBank and TX. in addition, there is Marketforce, the uk's leading magazine distribution buisness. digitally they have WOTV and goodtoknow. they also own music magaiznes such as "NME" and "Guitar and Bass".

 Thinking of a concept...

First of all to make a successful music magazine, you have to make it look good and you want the audience to look take a first glance and flip through the pages. This varies between the design layout, typography, colors and whether or not there is a well recognized person on the front cover. Furthermore, famous people are often preferred to advertise the magazine because it could draw the attention of many. To extend this, the front cover of a music magazine must have a powerful story which varies between different genders of music. Likewise it must have an image relevant to the "big story" which leads it to benefit the audience.

Another key element to making a music magazine successful, is for you to look at other magazine designs over 5 years and see what they all have in common. you can find this sort of information is on the Society Publications Designers website, in addition to this you can look on the American Society of Magazine editors Top 40 Magazine covers of the last 40 years. you can use this for ideas and inspirations for things such as font, color and images. With this, you can look at various types of writing techniques to use in your titles, headings and sub headings, for example using alliteration, rhetorical questions and possibly the rule of 3. Also try and limit the number of cover lines because otherwise, people wont have time to pass by shops and read the contents and possibly buy the product. To help this, you could use descriptive words and adjectives and not to overflow the cover with text.

Also you have to choose a good picture which is relevant to the story and also make sure that the background is simple so that it doesn't make the magazine unattractive and doesn't make the colors clash. Otherwise you can use a simple picture but you could edit or manipulate it so that it can surprise and get the readers attention. In some cases this is more effective because it describes the story without the use of images. another thing that i noticed on most magazines, was that they had different competitions depending on the genre of the magazine. this is good because the audience have the chance to get involved in the music industry and maybe meet their idols or stars. This also gives the chance to the audience to show what kind of work they produce, which then leads to the company or industry hiring them and make a living out of it.

                                                                  NME History
The New Musical Express, popularly known by the acronym NME, created by Theodore Smythson, is a uk weekly pop/rock music publication, published since March 1952. It started as a music newspaper, and gradually moved toward a magazine format during the 1980s and 90s, changing from newsprint in 1998. It was the first British paper to include a singles chart, in the 14 November 1952 edition. In the 1970s it became the best-selling British music newspaper.

        History of the music magazine
         The first issue of a billboard magazine was printed in 1894 but it was in 1936 that it became well known. This gradually evolved into radio airplay and record sales charts (the billboard charts). The billboard charts provided different music genres and was the foundation for slots on radio programmes like “American top 40”. The magazine is aimed at music professionals however, it is available to the general public.
